Adapted From True Blue and The Philosophy of Blue
In the Starfall Galaxy, some individuals and factions are profoundly attuned to the mana-currents of Blue Devotion. This is the eye that is always looking to the future, the mind that is transfixed with the universe’s riddles, and the hand that crafts spectacular tools of both technology and Mana. Blue Devotion is the question on the tip of the inquisitive tongue: "If a secret is not a wall but a door, how many secrets must I pass through to reach my destination?" Simply put, Blue Devotion sees the universe and the self as incomplete, something to be shaped and improved upon, a task it obsessively intends to complete.
Blue Devotion
Seeks knowledge, technology, and flawless execution. Can lead to brilliant innovation and logical foresight, or to cold, unemotional cruelty and the erasure of all imperfection.
Allied Devotions White and Black
Rival Devotions Red and Green
Blue Magic When spellcasters manifest Blue aligned spells, they may feel a sense of clarity and understanding. Sometimes they feel a deep sense of superiority and confidence in their intellect.
Core Philosophy: The Pursuit of Perfection
In its simplest form, Blue Devotion is about gaining satisfaction from understanding the self and the cosmos. Armed with this understanding, a devotee can find their true purpose. They take in every bit of sensory information they can, forming a mental map of their desired future, then aim to understand everything about it. Whether it's the nature of time itself, the inner workings of a Cerebral Nexus, the expansion of technology, or the raw application of Mana, Blue understands that knowledge without action is meaningless.
This devotion is a relentless cycle of learning, tinkering, and iteration. A devotee will take what they have learned and ask, "What more can this be?" and "How can I perfect it?" To this end, they utilize tools crafted by their own hands and the raw Mana of the Rift. In the mind of Blue, a wrench is no different from a Mana-infused crystal, and a technological schematic is no different from a spell scroll—they are all just tools to solve a problem. This is what makes a Blue devotee so adaptable, as they can become just as much a brilliant engineer as they would a powerful technomancer.
The purpose of a Blue devotee is to search for the question, build the tools to solve the problem, gain a new understanding from the solution, and then repeat the process for the rest of time. It is an obsessive loop—a need to know, to act, and to bring about change. The path is more a circle than a line, and while this obsessive nature may seem frustrating to others, to a Blue devotee, it is what makes life worth living. For what is life if there is nothing left to work toward, even if that work is never complete?
The Blue Devotee: A Dual Nature
A devotee of Blue Devotion sees a world where every action has a logical purpose. Their ideal world would be one where each person contributes toward a single, logical conclusion, a world of constant, undeniable progression. This society might lack the trivialities of humanity, devolving into a society of near-robotic efficiency, but it would be one that surpasses the constraints of frivolous desires and emotions. Blue Devotion pleads with others to look to a future that is more impressive than the fate they are stumbling toward, to "spend less time making weapons to destroy, and more time making tools to create."
This focus on logic and progress can make it difficult for a Blue devotee to form emotional connections. They may neglect those around them if those people do not contribute to their work. They are just as happy working alone as with others, so long as their progress is not impeded. Blue devotees can often find themselves aligned with the White devotion, as both colors seek a perfect version of society and a state of perfection in the self. One uses compassion and the other uses logic, but they both walk a similar path.
However, Blue Devotion is also pulled in another direction by Black Devotion. Blue finds Black's amoral and ambitious nature to be a powerful boon when working on projects that require a lack of empathy. They can have little use for ethics when the truth is so close. This creates a constant conflict of logic versus compassion, a conflict that can turn a Blue devotee cold and unfeeling if they are not careful.
At the same time, Blue finds itself at odds with Green Devotion, which sees constant improvement as a sin against the natural order, and Red Devotion, which is so swept up in immediate gratification that it loses sight of what the future could be.
What Represents Blue Devotion
Here are several things that Blue cares about, along with why:
Academics— If education is the key, then having places to learn is necessary. Blue is a big supporter of any and all educational systems.
Books & Other Repositories of Information— Blue values any tool that it can use to gather and store information. It treats these items as something special and values them highly.
Mind/Thought— Blue values intellect and, as such, is the color that is most often representative of the brain or any means of thinking. Blue is the color most often associated with the mind and any form of logical thought.
Memory— Blue is the color most interested in the idea of how one's memory ties into what an individual knows and does not know. A valuable way to deprive others of information or to give them misinformation is to mess with their memory.
Telepathy— If knowledge is key, then the ability to get it directly out of others' minds is a valuable tool one Blue is willing to use.
Telekinesis— Another means of accomplishing physical tasks with the mind is using mental energy directly to perform physical actions. As such, mind over matter is another blue tool.
Messing with Time— Yet another resource Blue messes around with is the very fabric of time itself. Blue's studies have helped it uncover secrets that none of the other colors are privy to, how to use time as both a resource and a weapon.
Control— Blue doesn't always have the skills it needs to accomplish its tasks, so it has learned the value of using its resource to control those who do. It's an example of a mental process helping solve a physical problem.
Manipulation— Like control, manipulation is a way to use information to get things done. Blue feels that it has a better understanding of the bigger picture, and thus manipulation is a necessary tool to get those that don't understand it moving in the right direction.
Trickery— Yet another way to use information to accomplish a task.
Subtlety— Blue's obsession with details often allows it to function in ways others might not notice. Blue does not want to risk even the tiniest detail derailing its plans.
Complexity— Another means of controlling things is to overwhelm others with too much information. Blue is the color that enjoys complex systems and uses them, at times, as a means to disrupt others.
Artifice— Blue's belief in the value of manipulation and trickery makes it willing to create things that are not real in an attempt to confuse others.
Illusion— This type of magic, which thrives on the ignorance of others, plays straight into Blue's strength. It is interesting to Blue that this type of magic's weakness is knowledge, meaning it can never be used effectively against Blue.
Construction/Technology— Blue believes strongly in the importance of tools, so it is on the cutting edge of the resources needed to create them.
Artifacts— As the color that loves technology, blue is the color that has the closest tie to artifacts. It both uses them the most and has the easiest time manipulating them.
Man-Made Items— Blue is the color willing to manufacture whatever is needed. Blue cares in the function of an item, not its origin.
Passivity— Blue's reliance on thinking out solutions makes it the color that most often uses inaction.
Cold— Blue's resistance to emotion makes it metaphorically the coldest, and this thematic connection carries over to its magic. Cold has proven a powerful tool to prevent things from happening.
Elements of Water/Air— Air and water represent mental processes metaphorically and have become physical attributes the color leans toward. This also plays into blue's conflict with red, which supports the elements of fire and earth.
