Repair Untrained
Requirements You are holding or wearing a repair toolkit.
You spend 10 minutes attempting to fix a damaged item, placing the item on a stable surface, and using the repair toolkit with both hands. Roll a Crafting check. The GM sets the DC, but it's usually about the same DC to Repair a given item as it is to Craft it in the first place. You can't repair a destroyed item.
Critical Success You restore 10 Hit Points to the item, plus an additional 10 Hit Points per proficiency rank you have in Crafting (a total of 20 HP if you're trained, 30 HP if you're an expert, 40 HP if you're a master, or 50 HP if you're legendary).
Success You restore 5 Hit Points to the item, plus an additional 5 per proficiency rank you have in Crafting (for a total of 10 HP if you are trained, 15 HP if you're an expert, 20 HP if you're a master, or 25 HP if you're legendary).
Critical Failure You deal 2d6 damage to the item. Apply the item's Hardness to this damage.
Sample Repair Tasks
Untrained Repair Tasks (DC 10-14, 10 minutes)
Jury-Rig a Comm Unit: A basic handheld comm unit has sustained minor impact damage, causing static interference. A successful Repair check temporarily restores clear communication for an hour. Critical Failure: The comm unit short-circuits, requiring a higher DC repair later.
Patch a Torn Environmental Suit: A character's environmental suit has a small tear from brushing against sharp alien flora. A successful Repair check prevents further air loss for a short duration (e.g., 1d4 hours). Critical Failure: The tear widens, causing faster air loss.
Stabilize a Flickering Holo-Display: A public holo-display in a bustling spaceport is flickering erratically. A successful Repair check stabilizes the image for a few minutes, allowing quick access to information. Critical Failure: The display goes completely dark.
Mend a Damaged Energy Cell: A low-grade energy cell for a personal device has a loose connection. A successful Repair check allows it to function for a single use before needing a proper repair. Critical Failure: The cell sparks and becomes unusable.
Trained Repair Tasks (DC 15-19, 10 minutes)
Repair a Damaged Starship Console: During a minor skirmish, a starship's navigation console took a glancing hit, causing some readouts to be inaccurate. A successful Repair check restores partial functionality, allowing for basic navigation. Critical Failure: The console completely locks up, requiring a more extensive repair.
Fix a Malfunctioning Weapon System (Small Arms): A laser pistol or plasma rifle is overheating or misfiring. A successful Repair check allows the weapon to function normally for a few combat rounds or until its next critical hit. Critical Failure: The weapon jams completely or explodes on the next shot (minor damage to user).
Restore Power to a Minor System on an Abandoned Station: A section of an old, derelict space station has lost auxiliary power. A successful Repair check can reroute power to a single minor system (e.g., a single door, a light panel, a data terminal). Critical Failure: Causes a power surge that damages other nearby systems.
Calibrate a Misaligned Sensor Array: A portable sensor array used for scanning for resources or life signs is giving false readings. A successful Repair check recalibrates it for accurate readings for a limited time. Critical Failure: The array becomes completely inoperable.
Expert Repair Tasks (DC 20-24, 10 minutes)
Repair a Critically Damaged Droid Companion: A combat droid companion has taken heavy damage, impairing its movement and targeting systems. A successful Repair check restores some of its functionality, allowing it to move at half speed and make attacks with a penalty. Critical Failure: The droid becomes inert and requires a full overhaul.
Bypass a Security System with Damaged Wiring: A high-security door's control panel has been damaged, preventing normal access. A successful Repair check can bypass the damaged wiring, opening the door for a short period. Critical Failure: Triggers an alarm and seals the door permanently.
Stabilize a Grav-Lift in a Crumbling Ruin: A grav-lift in an ancient, unstable ruin is failing, threatening to drop its occupants. A successful Repair check can stabilize it long enough for passengers to exit safely. Critical Failure: The grav-lift plummets, causing significant damage.
Patch a Breach in a Starship's Hull (Minor): A small breach has occurred in a non-critical section of a starship's hull. A successful Repair check can create a temporary patch, preventing further depressurization for a few hours of travel. Critical Failure: The breach expands, leading to rapid depressurization.
Master Repair Tasks (DC 25-29, 10 minutes)
Reactivate a Dormant Ancient Mana-Tech Device: An ancient piece of Vaelen or other precursor mana-tech is found inert. A successful Repair check can reactivate it, potentially revealing its function or a hidden message. Critical Failure: The device overloads, causing a localized mana-surge or explosion.
Repair a Starship's Primary Engine After a Rift-Space Jump: A starship's primary engine has sustained damage or temporal distortions from a turbulent jump through Rift-Space. A successful Repair check can restore the engine to partial power, allowing for slow, cautious travel. Critical Failure: The engine suffers a catastrophic failure, leaving the ship adrift.
Restore a Corrupted AI Core: A vital AI core for a planetary defense system or a critical database has been corrupted by a digital virus or Rift-Taint. A successful Repair check can purge the corruption and restore partial functionality. Critical Failure: The AI becomes hostile or the data is permanently lost.
Repair a Damaged Environmental Control System on a Colony: The environmental controls for a small colony dome are failing, threatening the inhabitants. A successful Repair check can stabilize the system, preventing immediate catastrophe. Critical Failure: The system completely fails, leading to a rapid decline in habitability.
Legendary Repair Tasks (DC 30+, 10 minutes)
Reconstruct a Severely Damaged Starship Section: A significant portion of a starship, such as a wing or a primary weapon mount, has been almost completely destroyed. A successful Repair check can initiate the process of reconstructing the item from available salvage, enabling minimal functionality. Critical Failure: The attempt causes further structural damage, making future repairs even harder.
Repair a Riftgate After a Cataclysmic Event: A Riftgate, vital for interstellar travel, has been severely damaged by a localized Riftstorm. A successful Repair check is a monumental undertaking, potentially requiring unique components and precise calibration to bring it back online. Critical Failure: The Riftgate destabilizes, creating a dangerous temporal anomaly.
Restore a Sentient Construct's Core Personality Matrix: A highly advanced sentient automaton or synthetic has had its core personality matrix severely damaged, leading to erratic behavior or complete catatonia. A successful Repair check can attempt to restore its original personality and memories. Critical Failure: The construct's personality is permanently altered or erased.
