Marching From The Vault; Shadows

Recall Knowledge - Undead (Religion)
: DC 19

Unspecific Lore: DC 17

Specific Lore: DC 14

The shadow is a sinister undead creature.

Appearance

The aptly-named shadow is a shadowy, incorporeal undead creature that is vaguely humanoid in shape.

Habitat and society

Shadows are generally found singly or in groups of up to a dozen. They prefer to inhabit ruins and appear to have no aims other than to drain the life force from living creatures.

Abilities

The incorporeal shadow is difficult to fight in combat and proves strangely resistant to positive energy. They cannot inflict physical wounds, but their touch drains their victims' strength, which can prove fatal. Victims killed by a shadow rise very shortly afterward as new shadows are under its control.

Greater shadow

Shadows who kill many victims, spend sufficient time on the Plane of Shadow, or come into contact with large amounts of negative energy can grow in power and become greater shadows.

These undead monsters are tougher and more dangerous than ordinary shadows, and can drain strength at an increased rate. They are often found as leaders of their lesser brethren.

The mysterious undead known as shadows lurk in dark places and feed on those who stray too far from the light. Those who parley with shadows, typically by keeping them at bay with a glowing weapon, may learn great secrets, for they are ideal spies.

Shadow Spawn When a creature’s shadow is pulled free by Steal Shadow, it becomes a shadow spawn under the command of the shadow that created it. This shadow spawn doesn’t have Steal Shadow and is perpetually and incurably clumsy 2. If the creature the shadow spawn was pulled from dies, the shadow spawn becomes a full-fledged, autonomous shadow. If the creature recovers from its enfeeblement, its shadow returns to it, and the shadow spawn is extinguished.

Slink in Shadows The shadow can Hide or end its Sneak in a creature’s or object’s shadow.

(Single Action) Steal Shadow  (divine, necromancy) Requirement The shadow hit a living creature with a shadow hand Strike on its previous action. Effect The shadow pulls at the target’s shadow, making the creature enfeebled 1. This is cumulative with other enfeebled conditions from shadows to a maximum of enfeebled 4. If this increases a creature’s enfeebled value to 3 or more, the target’s shadow is separated from its body (see shadow spawn). Enfeebled from Steal Shadow decreases by 1 every hour.

Shadow Variants

Source Pathfinder #183: Field of Maidens pg. 73 While the vast majority of shadows are humanoid in shape, shadows can appear in different forms, such as those of predatory animals or terrifying beasts. Sometimes called feral shadows, these shadows are often more animalistic and aggressive than humanoid-shaped shadows. In addition, some variant shadows have the following alternate rules that adjust the shadow stat block. These changes don't adjust the shadow's level.

Darting Shadows

Some shadows have taken their ability to hide in shadows to a greater level, shifting from one shadow to another with supernatural ease. Darting shadows gain the following ability.

(Double Action) Shadow Hop  (magical, teleportation) Requirements The shadow is in an area of dim light; Effect The shadow teleports from its space to a clear space it can see that is in dim light or darkness within 60 feet. A shadow using this ability is slowed 1 for 1 round after arriving at its destination.

Possessing Shadows

Some greater shadows develop the coveted ability to possess a body. Only greater shadows can become possessing shadows, and they can't use Slink in Shadows or Steal Shadow while using Inhabit.

(Double Action)Inhabit  The shadow attempts to possess an adjacent undead corporeal creature. This has the same effect as the possession spell, except the shadow doesn't have a physical body, so it's unaffected by the spell's restriction.

Shadow Thief

Some shadows gain the ability to handle objects. A shadow thief can't use Slink in Shadows or Steal Shadow while using Shadow Touch.

(Double Action) Shadow Touch  The shadow Interacts with a simple physical object, such as picking up a book or opening a door (it can't manipulate a complicated object, like a lock). It can't carry more than a single physical object of up to 2 Bulk. It must use Shadow Touch to keep its hold on the item each turn, or it drops the item at the end of its turn.

Shadow Locations

Shadows might lurk in any dimly lit area—a corner in a crumbling ruin, a room lit by flickering candles or a shaded forest at dusk. They travel to and from the Shadow Plane, though it is unclear if they do so via their own magic or by aligning themselves with a more powerful being capable of such planar shifting.

Shadow NPCs

Slurking from the shadows, this incorporeal undead represents most adventurers first encounter with an intangible threat.
