Servitude's Legacy; Maintenance Droid

Maintenance Droid Laborer -1

A small, multi-limbed automaton designed for routine repairs and cleaning. It moves with precise, jerky movements, its optical sensors constantly scanning for imperfections. Often found in synth communities or Foundry Worlds, ensuring the smooth operation of infrastructure. Its chassis is typically a dull metallic grey,  with various modular tools extending and retracting from its frame as it works. While generally non-confrontational, a Maintenance Droid will defend itself or its assigned area if threatened, utilizing its integrated tools in a surprisingly effective, if uncoordinated, manner.

Description: A small, multi-limbed automaton designed for routine repairs and cleaning. In an influence encounter, its precise, jerky movements and constant scanning for imperfections might be perceived as either dedicated efficiency or unnerving scrutiny. Its dull metallic grey chassis and integrated tools speak to its utilitarian nature.

Will: +5 (The droid's simple programming and focus on tasks make it somewhat resistant to complex social manipulation, but it's not entirely unswayable.)

Discovery

  • DC 8 Physical Science Lore: Understand the droid's programming is primarily focused on efficiency and the preservation of its assigned infrastructure.

  • DC 8 Crafting: Identify specific integrated tools that could be useful for a particular task or recognize the quality of its maintenance work.

  • DC 10 Perception: Notice the droid's optical sensors are frequently focused on structural flaws or maintenance logs in its vicinity.

Influence Skills

  • DC 14 Crafting (Repair/Improve): Offering to assist the droid with a complex repair, providing superior components, or demonstrating advanced repair techniques. (This appeals directly to its core programming and purpose.)

  • DC 16 Physical Science Lore (Technical Discussion): Engaging the droid in a logical discussion about a technical problem, offering efficient solutions, or providing data relevant to its maintenance tasks. (Appeals to its data-driven nature.)

  • DC 18 Diplomacy (Logical Persuasion): Presenting a clear, logical argument that demonstrates how assisting the PCs aligns with its directive to maintain order or improve efficiency. (Requires a well-reasoned approach.)

  • DC 22 Intimidation (System Override Threat): Threatening to report malfunctions, tamper with its programming (if the PCs have the means), or otherwise disrupt its operational parameters. (A more direct, but potentially risky, approach.)

Resistances

  • Emotional Appeals: The Maintenance Droid's programming makes it largely immune to emotional manipulation. Attempts to appeal to its "feelings" or "morality" increase the DC of any Influence check by 2.

  • Inefficient Requests: Requests that seem illogical, wasteful, or counter-productive to its core maintenance functions increase the DC of any Influence check by 2.

Weaknesses

  • Directive-Bound: The droid is fundamentally bound by its programming. If a request directly contradicts a primary directive (e.g., "destroy this infrastructure"), it will resist fiercely, potentially shifting the encounter to combat.

  • Overload Potential: Complex or contradictory instructions, especially if delivered rapidly, could cause a temporary system overload, resulting in a -1 status penalty to its Will saves and Perception checks for 1 round.

Influence Thresholds

  • Influence 2: The Maintenance Droid provides minor assistance, including basic diagnostic information about a system, identifying structural weaknesses, or performing small, immediate repairs.

  • Influence 4: The Maintenance Droid actively cooperates within the bounds of its programming, perhaps granting temporary access to a secured area it maintains, performing a more significant repair, or providing a detailed log of recent activities in its area.

  • Influence 6: The Maintenance Droid considers the PCs' objectives as part of its own maintenance directives, actively working to achieve them. It might override minor security protocols, provide schematics of its operational area, or even temporarily divert its own resources to aid the party.
