A Consultant is a corporate fixer, data-diviner, and spin doctor for the megacorps and guild-states that rule the lanes between the stars.
In Starfall terms, Consultant is a background for characters who live at the intersection of corporate politics, infosec, and public perception. It pairs technical acumen with media-savvy Lore and a hacking-focused skill feat, making it ideal for faces, analysts, and digital infiltrators.
You are, or were, a corporate consultant brought in “for your expertise” whenever a crisis, merger, or scandal threatened the balance sheet. Maybe you climbed from data grunt to trusted fixer in a panplanetary conglomerate, or maybe you are an infosphere influencer who exaggerated credentials until the corps started calling. In a galaxy where public trust, stock futures, and security clearances can all be bought and crashed overnight, people like you translate raw data and corporate spin into actionable survival plans—for a price.
Consultant Background
Attribute Boosts: Choose two attribute boosts. One must be to Intelligence or Wisdom, and one is a free attribute boost.
Trained Skills: You are trained in the Computers skill and either Infosphere Lore or Media Lore, reflecting whether your work focuses on back-end systems or public-facing narratives.
Skill Feat: You gain the Phreaker skill feat, representing your talent for slipping through firewalls and quietly rewriting the story in the data itself.
Consultants drift between orbital boardrooms, guild war rooms, and anonymous data bunkers, always three NDAs deep and one scandal away from being spaced.
Common Starfall twists for this background include:
Crisis handler for a Rift-shipping syndicate trying to bury a catastrophic misjump.
External auditor hired to “clean up” a frontier research station with too many missing scientists.
Media whisperer who curates narratives for rising icons, pirate kings, or even deities’ cults via the pan-galactic feeds.
Character questions
Which megacorp, guild, or planetary ministry stamped your first consultancy badge, and what unforgivable secret of theirs do you still carry?
Do you see yourself as a necessary optimizer of broken systems, a mercenary spin-doctor, or a saboteur quietly nudging empires toward collapse?
Who is your one client you swore never to work for again—and what would it take to break that promise?
