Tools of the Brotherhood; the Axe of Shredding

I'm running a game with new players, and In helping them with their character building I asked them just to think of a concept they would like. One of my players, currently playing a lot of Hi-Fi Rush, only asked to be a rogue that uses a guitar as a weapon; here's what a made for him. he is currently unaware of anything beyond its basic stats.

This intricate instrument appears to be a beautifully crafted greataxe with a long wooden handle carved with swirling flame patterns. The deadly axe blade itself resembles a stylized dragonhead, with the two points forming the appearance of an open, roaring maw. Six thin metal strings are strung along the handle, allowing the weapon to be played like a Guitar.

When gripped, the Axe of Shredding thrums with latent power, the strings vibrating gently. Tales suggest a bard and master of Occultic magic originally created the Axe.

Axe Devotion The axe is the product of an artificer’s ambition for perfection; the Disciplined and meticulous study of magic and music has marked this instrument.

Adventure Hooks

  • Competing bard colleges believe an esteemed alumnus of their order crafted the Axe, and they seek to add the Axe of Shredding to their collection. The increasing demand attracts ambitious Bards and Rogues who seek to build their reputation by acquiring the relic.

  • A scaled sorcerer claims the Axe was stolen from his ancestor and demands the party return it as an ancestral heirloom.

  • A researcher believes the Axe is key to deciphering an ancient manuscript's prophecy about a looming threat. Retrieving it could prevent catastrophe.

Secrets

Polymath Bard, Zep Treble, crafted the Axe. In the relic’s crafting Zep courted competing patrons; he had convinced these patrons he was working on an artifact that could shift the balance of power in their favor. Treble fell before he was able to unweave his tangled weave of bargains. Zep’s spirit is trapped within the Axe. By locking his essence to the Axe Treble, he prevented his patrons from claiming him.

From within the Axe Treble can act as a Polymath Muse for the bearer. At the second level Zep likes to reward cooperative bearers with Archetype dedications.

A master player capable of awakening its power can use it to unleash devastating sonic attacks and magical effects.
